30 June 2016

The LPA recognizes that reaching out to stakeholders involved in the nascent petroleum sector in Lebanon contributes to building a powerful society able to engage in vital discussions in an informed manner. In this regard, Mr. Walid Nasr - Head of the Strategic Planning Department – participated in a roundtable discussion organized by the Citizens’ Movement on the 30th of June 2016. The purpose of the session was to bring together experts and members of the civil society to discuss the characteristics of the prospective Lebanese oil and gas sector, and to see whether this sector is a blessing or curse on Lebanon.

Nasr tackled the main governance concerns people could have, and addressed the measures put-in place to ensure that best practices govern the sector. Furthermore, Nasr presented to members of the civil society facts and figures pertinent to the geological, legal, institutional and fiscal frameworks governing the sector emphasizing on the importance of having an enlightened and objective discussion about the sector.

Another panelist included Ms. Laury Haytayan from the Natural Resource Governance Institute (NRGI) who discussed the importance of a vital sector such as this one and the need to capitalize on this opportunity while it presents itself. To conclude the event, participants proactively engaged in a constructive Questions and Answers (Q&As) session.
